Ismail Al-Azhari

Darfur

Ismail Al-Azhari His opposition to British rule and support of unification with Egypt brought him national attention. As Prime minister (1954 - 1956), however, he led the Sudan to complete and separate independence in January 1956. Factionalism within his ruling party cost him his leadership role, and he was the opposition leader from 1956 to 1958. Following a six year period of military rule, of El Ferik Ibrahim Abboud regime, he was appointed president (1965), but was overthrown in a military coup in May 1969, by Gaafar Al-Numeiry. He died in 1969 while in custody.

Ibrahim Aboud - 1900 - 1983 - A sudanese political leader. As a military officer, Aboud rose through the ranks of the Sudanese branch of the Egyptian army and after Sudan gained independence (1956) became Commander in Chief.

Mohamad Ahmad Mahgoub

Darfur Prime Minister, 10 June, 1965 - 25 July, 1966 Prime Minister, 18 May, 1967 - 25 May, 1969 Mohamed Ahmad Mahgoub, Sudanese political leader. Born in 1908, in Al-Dueim, by profession he was a lawyer and a judge, he is a Sudanese political leader. A Civil Engineer graduate of Gordon Memorial College (Khartoum), he was a prominent Lawyer (1958 - 1964).

Abdulrahman Siwar Al-Dhab

. After the popular uprising (Intifada)(April 1985) he became the chairman of the transitional military council. As promised, he respectfully surrendered power to the elected government of Sadiq Al-Mahdi in 1986. In 1987 he became chairman of the Islamic call organization. He still holds that post.

He became a prominent figure when former president Gaafar Numeiry appointed him chief of staff, and then minister of defence and general commander of the armed forces in 1984

Did his college education at Comboni College in Khartoum, then studied Economics at the University of Khartoum, and then continued his graduate studies at Oxford University , England (1957).

Ahmed Ali Al-Mirghani

He became the elected Head of State of the third democratically elected government of The Sudan, with Sadig Al-Mahdi as his Prime Minister until the June 30, 1989 Coup detat lead by General Omer Albashir. He currenlty resides in Egypt leading the opposition National Democratic Alliance (NDA) comprising of several opposition parties fighting the current regime in The Sudan. He also co-founded the Islamic Development Corporation and the Sudanese Islamic Bank. President, 6 May, 1986 - 30 June, 1989 Ahmed Ali Al-Mirghani - (1941 - ) - A sudanese political and religious sect leader. Born in Khartoum North on August 16, 1941. He graduated from the University of London. He became a prominent figure after the transitional government of president Siwar Al-Dhab in which he handed over the government to civillian rule in April 6, 1986.

Omer Hassan A. Al-Bashir

Darfur President, 30 June, 1989 - Present Omar H.A. Al-Bashier - 1945 - - A sudanese political and military leader. He is currently the President of the Sudan. Al-Bashier comes from a rural and working class background. He was born in the town of Hoshe Bannaga, 100 Km North East of Khartoum. He did his high school education in the Ahlia Middle School in Shendi. His family then moved to Khartoum were he did his secondary school education. He supplemented his education and family income by working in a motor garage. After his Secondary education, he was admitted into the the military academy as a pilot. He earned his wings in the Airborne Forces, and then transferred to the Infantry Brigade. He holds two masters degrees in Military Science from the Sudanese College of Commanders and Malaysia In 1988, he was put in command of the 8th Brigade in the South of Sudan, fighting the rebellion in the South of the Country. In June of 1989, with a group of middle rank military officers, he staged a coup d'etat against the elected Coalition government of Sadiq Al-Mahdi. His policy of Islamization of the Sudan and implementation of the Islamic Law (Sharia) has enraged and fueled the already ongoing war in the South of the Country. Due to the misguided economic and political policies of his government, the economic downturn and the degradation of the state and social institutions in the Sudan continues. Sir Al-Khatim Khalifah On November 18, 1958 in a military coup he overthrew the civilian government of Abd Allah Khalil, and he installed a military government, with himself as presiding officer. The constitution was abrogated and opposition parties banned. He charted a course of neutrality in foreign affairs, of agricultural diversification and of industrialization. The failure of his economic program, however, coupled with his policy of "Islamization" of the non-muslim South, created near civil war and led to his resignation (1964) and the restoration of civilian government, which was handed over to Sir Al-Khatim Khalifah
